Back in March, we learned of an interesting new social tool called Hunch. Cofounded by Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, the startup’s goal is to help you make decisions by using its algorithms together with traits it has learned about you. Ask it a question, and it helps you choose an answer that suits you. It has been in private beta since it was revealed.
Today though, that veil comes off, and Hunch becomes open to all. It’s gone through a lot of changes and gained a lot of new features since we first reviewed it. So what have Caterina and her team built? What has changed? And most of all, could it really transform how people consider and make decisions? To answer these questions, we took this little “decision engine” out for another spin.
Hunch: The Overview
If you missed our last review, here’s the short version of it: Hunch is a tool that utilizes decision trees to help make a decision on virtually any topic. It can help you figure out what to eat for the night, which online dating website to try, or if you should move to another country by asking a series questions that drill down to a final set of answers.
On top of this, Hunch utilizes information that it knows about you to improve the relevancy of results. This is primarily done by answering a series of (nearly) endless questions in its Teach Hunch About You section. Not only does it help the algorithm, but it’s actually quite enjoyable to use.
Once you get to an answer, you can view the top 5 results, read user reviews (pros and cons), and even edit the results or fix the hunch if you believe something’s amiss, much like a wiki. Essentially, these are the core attributes of the Hunch decision system.
What’s changed
Since Hunch’s launch, it has had 30,000+ users create over 7 million questions in its system. The average user has created 120 questions, which is a huge testament to Hunch’s stickiness and entertainment factor. Hunch has utilized all of this data to create some very interesting and useful community features.
The biggest addition to Hunch is the Workshop, a place where you create new questions and topics before they go live for all users. Hunch found that many questioned needed additional work and the input of others to get the answers right, and thus it launched a system where users can create questions and results. Before it appears on the site, users must vote it up in an interesting Digg-like system that promotes good content to the main website.
The other big change to hunch has been a huge increase in community features. Profiles are rich in content, allow you to follow users you like, and earn “banjos,” which is the currency of Hunch. Yes, you earn banjos, of all things, for creating and answering questions. There’s also a news feed so you can keep up with friends.
Hunch is the Real Decision Engine
When we last used Hunch, we were impressed by its accuracy and the breadth of content it covered. Now, we’re simply astounded. I thought of practically every question I could really want to ask, and Hunch had a decision tree to help me resolve my doubts. In that regard, Hunch and its community really does help.
Hunch’s most direct competitor is probably Let Simon Decide, which takes a more mathematical approach to decision-making (although Hunch does a lot of statistical analysis in the background). What separates Hunch from Let Simon Decide, though, is the entertainment and social factor. You’re not leaving your decisions in the hands of just a computer, but have the input of thousands of people who’ve been in similar situations, which is actually quite comforting.
What will make or break Hunch is its user retention and entertainment value. Will users stay once they sign up? Will they find value? From what we’ve seen, the answer is a definitive yes. More than Bing or Simon, Hunch is a full-featured decision engine that is tough not to use once you get into the swing of it. If you decide to take it for a swing, be sure to add me as a friend for starters.

Spam is an ever-growing concern. Currently, over 90% of all emails sent worldwide are spam. When I left South Korea in 2004, a hotbed of SMS activity, over 25% of my SMS messages were spam. However, spam is a unique and special concern for Twitter. This is because Twitter is a broadcast system and you can easily accumulate contacts beyond your circle of close friends.
Last May when I predicted that Twitter would go mainstream, I warned about appearance of spam as its popularity became widespread. Now spammers are becoming more prevalent on Twitter and the scammer subset seems to be increasing the fastest.
In order to better understand how these unwanted entities are filling Twitter with their junk, I have categorized Twitter scammers into three buckets: Twitomercials, Straight Cons, and Clueless Cons.
Twitomercials
Twitomercials are legitimate businesses that shamelessly pitch their products through endless repetitive streams of tweets through dummy accounts. They remind me of the late-night infomercials that repeat endlessly on some cable channels.
ShamWow, youll say WOW everytime! is the catchphrase for the (super) absorbent towel with the goofy but slick salesman providing demo after demo of their supposedly incredible product. The Twitter equivalent is an account with the picture of an attractive girl with various tweets pitching the same product:
Permanent Hair Removal Treatment http://sellhard.com/5j4k
Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You? http://sellhard.com/5i5o
âFacial Hair Removal For Women – What Are Your Options? http://sellhard.com/5hizâ
Just be thankful video isn’t enabled directly on Twitter.
Straight Cons
Straight Cons are the blatant attempts to take peoples money that most people know to ignore apart from that susceptible 0.1% of the population. Some of you might have that one distant cousin who actually wired $1,000 to the Central Bank of Nigeria to claim $5 million from a long-lost great uncle who had no progeny.
This is the primary pitch for one Straight Con Twitter account I came across:
This System Makes Me At Least $171,168.06 Per Month And You Can Start Using It 15 Minutes From Now
Awesome. $171,168.06 per month? They must have some incredible algorithms to get it down to the pennies. MIT PhDs no doubt. Sign me up!
Clueless Cons
These are cons that have taken a basic concept and raised it to a whole new level of stupidity. One that I came across several times now is joint venture marketing and joint venture gold. My guess is that they must have overheard their friend who went to business school (or who read a book about business school) talk about joint ventures and thought it was a hot concept that they could actually sell. I love this line from one of the profiles:
Joint ventures are the roads to fortune. When I finally understood that the money is mostly made on the back-end instead of the front-end, well, I got excited!
Do they even realize a joint venture is just a type of partnership a company might form with another company? That it isnt a concept that deserves a whole category within marketing or corporate development? I was thinking of some equivalents to joint venture marketing in other fields. It would be like a chef trying to sell deep fried cooking or charbroiled cooking in an infomercial.
Often times, these accounts will mix in tweets about how great their money making scheme is with tweets about mundane topics.
Tip of the Iceberg
The Twitomercials, Straight Cons, and Clueless Cons that are already here on Twitter are just the tip of the iceberg. Anything online scammers and cons have been doing on e-mail or the web will shortly be adapted to Twitter and any other popular new medium that could yield profits. So in the coming year, Twitter will have a real spam problem. Unless they do something about it, these profiles and scams are bound to grow.
I just hope that Twitter wont go the way of MySpace, where fake accounts are abundant and the majority of my friend requests are from small businesses pitching a product or scammers trying to sell their fools gold. MySpace grew because of its wild, wild west environment, but eventually it became too unruly and disengaging for most people.
To flourish, Twitter has to find ways to stem the rising tide of scams. It would be a shame to see Twitter flooded by the same people that have overtaken email, SMS, and my home landline (hate those telemarketers!).
At one point in history, job boards were the thing to do if you wanted to somehow monetize your site without having a clear business model. So, pretty much every major (and minor) site started a job board. Although the trend has somewhat subsided, from what I hear it’s still not a bad idea; sometimes it works great, sometimes mediocre, but it can’t hurt to try.
That’s probably what the folks at Reddit were thinking when they started Reddit Jobs, a Reddit job board. Although Reddit is more of a place to relax and read some funny comments than to go about job hunting, the Reddit community is young and smart, meaning they might be inclined to actually do real work at some date. It has also often been keen on changing the world for the better, doing the right thing and connecting the right people. Perhaps the job board will help great people find great jobs.
The actual job board is simple and gives you the ability to search for jobs, companies, or post jobs for a fee of $300, which will keep your listing on the site for 30 days.
In classic Reddit fashion, the job board does have a couple of funny details. For example, the Attributes section of the Company Profiles lets you set various unorthodox attributes as far as job listing goes. If Mashable were hiring on this particular job board, it would have a neutral good alignment, adhocratic level of bureaucracy, and an IT Freedom level that lets you admin your own box. As far as attire goes, you need to at least be wearing pants. I’m not gonna tell you if I currently adhere to this standard.
